Champion Iron resumes Bloom Lake operations as forest fire subsides
The news: Champion Iron’s workers are gradually returning to its Bloom Lake mining site in Quebec, Canada following preventative measures against a forest fire that forced evacuation in the mine and nearby Labrador City.
The context: A fresh wave of a forest fire that had been deemed controlled forced Champion to close the mine on July 12th (Montréal time).
Though the fire is still active north of Bloom Lake, downgraded evacuation pre-alerts for the nearby town of Fermont and unaffected infrastructure have allowed Champion to reinstate workers at the mine.
Champion is collaborating with local authorities and rail operators to resume rail shipments from the mine to the port at Sept-Îles, from which Champion exports iron ore to the global market.
Champion stated that the resumption of full operational mine activities are subject to the availability of railway services to ship the mine’s production.
