Chartered Accountants ANZ to review KPMG information handling and culture
The news: Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) has announced it is reviewing KPMG Australia and other major Australian firms’ handling of confidential information and how they promote an ethical culture.
The context: CA ANZ said it is “deeply disappointed” by the allegations involving KPMG in its handling of confidential client information.
It said chief executive Ainslie van Onselen exercised powers under CA ANZ’s regulations to direct the reviews over and above the regular cycle of Quality Practice Reviews for firms.
Van Onselen, general counsel and group executive of corporate assurance Vanessa Chapman, CA ANZ board chair Sarah Petersen, and disciplinary tribunal chair Grace Kelly, will appear at the Parliamentary Joint Committee on 19 June, which will focus on KPMG’s whistleblower allegations.
What they said: “We have recommended that enhanced whistleblower protections be introduced for the partnership model,” van Onselen said.
“There is a gap there, we believe, and we are very much proponents of that regulatory reform to enable those whistleblower protections.”
