China 'currently assessing' US trade talk proposals
The news: China's Commerce Ministry said it is "currently assessing" proposals by the US to begin trade talks, signalling a move towards negotiations between the world's two largest economies.
The context: A ministry spokesperson said in a statement that "the US has recently sent multiple messages to China through relevant parties, hoping to start talks with China. China is currently evaluating this."
However, Beijing underlined that a number of preconditions would need to be met before any talks take place.
"The tariff and trade war was unilaterally initiated by the US, and if it wants to negotiate, it must demonstrate genuine sincerity — that includes being prepared to correct its wrongdoings and cancel its unilateral tariff hikes," the spokesperson said.
Last month, US President Donal Trump hiked tariffs on Chinese imports to 145%, to which China retaliated with 125% duties on US goods.
