The news: China's Ministry of Commerce has released plans to tighten export restrictions on certain technology used to make battery components and process critical minerals lithium and gallium, Reuters reported.

The context: The proposed change is part of efforts to "strengthen the management of technology imports and exports", according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency.

China's commerce ministry has issued a notice seeking public opinion by 1 February.

The new measures follow a ban on a number of materials with high-tech and military applications, after the US government increased technology curbs on China.

Gallium and germanium, which are no longer allowed to be shipped to the US from China, are used in several technology products including semiconductors and satellites.
