Cochlear adds former Foxtel CEO Richard Freudenstein to board

The news: Hearing device maker Cochlear has appointed former Foxtel chief executive Richard Freudenstein to its board as a non-executive director, commencing 25 August.

The context: Freudenstein is currently a non-executive director at News Corp-controlled real estate platform REA Group and supermarket giant Coles. He is chairman of data services provider Appen, a board member of Cricket Australia and deputy chancellor of the University of Sydney.

He was previously chief executive at Foxtel between 2011 and 2016. Prior to that he spent time as CEO of News Digital Media and The Australian newspaper, and as chief operating officer at British Sky Broadcasting.

Cochlear has also announced that Glen Boreham intends to retire from the board at the end of the company's annual general meeting on 23 October, having served as a non-executive director since 2015.

What they said: "Richard brings a deep understanding of managing complex businesses operating in regulated industries and transformation in both mature and start-up businesses," said Cochlear chair Alison Deans.
