The news: Supermarket giant Coles reported a 3.4% rise in third-quarter sales, boosted by the ramp up of its second automated distribution centre in New South Wales.

The numbers: Coles recorded total sales revenue of $10.4 billion, up from $10 billion in the prior corresponding period.

The group's supermarkets division saw revenue grow 3.7% to $9.4 billion, while liquor sales climbed 3.4% to $813 million.

The context: Coles chief executive Leah Weckert said the three-month period marked the group's first quarter with both its automated distribution centres and customer fulfilment centres in operation.

The company faced a number of major weather events during the period, Weckert noted, including Cyclone Alfred and severe flooding in Far North Queensland.

Supermarkets sales growth has remained "broadly in line" with the third quarter in the early part of the fourth quarter, the company said.
