Coles says it will defend Federal Court class action

The news: Coles said it intends to defend class action proceedings against the supermarket giant, which have commenced in the Federal Court of Australia.

The context: The class action relates to price manipulation allegations, which are also the subject of proceedings commenced by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) against Coles and Woolworths in September.

Coles said it intends to defend the latest proceedings, commenced by Sydney law firm Gerard Malouf & Partners.

In September, the ACCC alleged that Woolworths and Coles each sold products at regular long-term prices which remained the same, excluding short-term specials, for at least six months and in many cases for at least a year.
