Commonwealth Bank appoints Luke Yeaman as chief economist
The news: Commonwealth Bank has appointed treasury deputy secretary and head of macroeconomic group Luke Yeaman as its chief economist and head of global economic and markets research.
Yeaman will start with the bank on March 3.
The context: Yeaman will start with the bank on 3 March and replaces Stephen Halmarick, who revealed plans to leave the bank, after 15 years, in August. Halmarick has been chief economist since 2020.
Yeaman has been in senior roles with treasury since April 2020, where he has managed macroeconomic forecasting, population analysis and climate and energy policy. Yeaman is a former G20 finance deputy and has held senior positions at the Office of National Intelligence and the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.
CBA group executive for institutional banking and markets Andrew Hinchliff said Yeaman's experience representing Australia abroad would be valuable for local and international clients. Yeaman will report to Hinchliff.
What they said: “As our chief economist, Luke will be able to leverage cutting-edge AI technology and one of the most comprehensive financial data sets in the country, that provides our economics’ team with unparalleled insights into Australia’s macroeconomic environment," Hinchliff said in a statement.
“I want to extend my deep thanks to Stephen Halmarick for his many years of service and his wide-ranging contributions to expanding and improving the range of economic, data-led, actionable insights we offer to our clients to better support their decision-making."
