Contact Energy chair Rob McDonald to retire, Jon Macdonald appointed successor

The news: New Zealand electricity generator and retailer Contact Energy chair Rob McDonald will retire after the company’s annual shareholder meeting this year. He will be succeeded by director Jon Macdonald.
The context: McDonald joined the Contact Energy board in 2015 and has been chair since 2018. During his tenure Contact acquired renewable energy generator Manawa Energy.
Incoming chair Macdonald has been on the board of Contact since 2018 and was formerly the chief executive of Trade Me Group. He is also chair of Sharesies Group and sits on the board of Mitre 10 New Zealand and Kiwibank Limited.
What they said: “It’s been a privilege to serve on the Contact board and as chair during a period of significant growth for the company. I am proud of what we have achieved together and have every confidence in Contact’s future,” outgoing chair McDonald said.
Contact CEO Mike Fuge said: “Under Rob’s tenure, Contact has been transformed — from advancing our renewables programme to navigating major strategic initiatives — all while maintaining a clear focus on our customers and shareholders.”
“We will miss Rob’s wise counsel, but we are pleased to see Jon stepping into the role of chair,” Fuge said.
