The news: Coronado Global Resources said that it has temporarily paused operations at its Buchanan underground mining complex in the US due to the death of an employee at the site.

The context: The metallurgical coal producer, which operates mines in Queensland and in several US states, reported that the incident occurred at its Virginia-based mine during the start of an evening shift on Friday.

The Brisbane-based miner said it is "deeply saddened by this tragic event" and has been working with the appropriate US federal and state agencies and cooperating with the authorities investigating the incident.

While Coronado has temporarily ceased operations at Buchanan to assist in the investigation, the company said it expects to reopen the complex on 3 June local time and does not anticipate the pause to materially impacts its operations as a whole.
