The news: Daniel Andrews has announced his resignation as Victoria's premier after nearly a decade in the job. He will step down as premier and as the member for Mulgrave, effective 5pm Wednesday.

The numbers: Andrews became Victorian premier after leading Labor to victory in the November 2014 election, knocking out Denis Napthine's Liberals after a single term. Andrews led Victorian Labor to two more victories in 2018 and 2022.

The context: Andrews' three election victories haven't been without controversy, and in recent years the leader has been under fire for pandemic lockdowns and most recently scrapping state plans to host the Commonwealth Games due to alleged skyrocketing costs. Labor will hold a caucus meeting tomorrow to elect the new premier.

What they said: "It is not an easy decision because as much as we have achieved together, there's so much to do," Andrews told reporters in Melbourne.

"When it is time, it is time."
