David Johnston named next Australian Defence Force chief
The news: Vice Admiral David Johnston has been named the next chief of the Australian Defence Force, and will take over from General Angus Campbell in July.
The numbers: Johnston joined the ADF in 1978 and has been the vice chief of the Defence Force since 2018. He has previously served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The context: As part of the shake-up of senior roles in the defence force following the elevation, chief of the Air Force Air Marshal Robert Chipman will become the next vice chief of the ADF. Air Vice‑Marshal Stephen Chappell will be appointed as the next chief of the Royal Australian Air Force.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Johnston’s understanding of integrated defence will be critical to delivering on the priorities and recommendations of the defence strategic review. He also paid tribute to Campbell, who has been in the role since 2018, making him the longest-serving head of the defence force.
