Denmark PM wants Trump to stop Greenland takeover threat
The news: Denmark and Greenland leaders have urged Donald Trump to stop his ongoing threat to take over Greenland after he reiterated his wish to do so in an interview with The Atlantic Magazine, Reuters reported.
The context: US President Donald Trump spoke in an interview with The Atlantic Magazine a day after the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro of his wish to run the latin American country and reiterated that he would like to also take over Greenland.
This comes after Trump named Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland and advocated for Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory, to become part of the United States.
According to the Trump administration, the Arctic island’s strategic position between Europe and North America makes it a key site for the US ballistic missile defence system, as well as an area of attractive mineral wealth.
What they said: "It makes absolutely no sense to talk about the US needing to take over Greenland. The US has no right to annex any of the three countries in the Danish Kingdom," Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said.
"I would therefore strongly urge the US stop the threats against a historically close ally and against another country and another people, who have very clearly said that they are not for sale."
