DIGI boss Sunita Bose exits role after seven years
The news: Digital Industry Group (DIGI) managing director Sunita Bose is leaving the social media companies’ industry group ahead of the government’s planned digital duty of care being realised.
The context: Bose will depart in August after seven years leading the organisation. She started as its only staff member and has overseen the lobby group’s expansion at a time when the government and regulatory spotlight on big tech has brightened.
Australia’s six-month-old ban on under-16s using social media is now being copied around the world.
Communications Minister Anika Wells has also flagged a digital duty of care — requiring the companies to put online safety at the heart of their product design — will go to parliament before the end of the year. The government is also still finalising its new version of the news bargaining incentive to require large tech companies to pay media organisations.
Both will likely set up disputes with DIGI’s members, who include Apple, Google, Meta, Snapchat and Tiktok.
What they said: “I am particularly proud of the role DIGI has played in strengthening online safety, addressing scams and misinformation, improving media literacy, and bringing industry and government together to find solutions to challenging policy questions,” Bose said.
“While it’s difficult to step away from an organisation I have dedicated so much of myself to building, now is the right time for me to pursue a new leadership challenge, and I leave knowing DIGI is well positioned for its next chapter.”
