Disney+ to expand ad-supported streaming to Australia and New Zealand
The news: Disney will launch an ad-supported tier on its streaming service Disney+ in Australia and New Zealand within months, the company said.
The cheaper tier will use targeted advertising technology to connect brands with specific audience segments across Disney’s content library at scale.
The numbers: Pricing and timing were not disclosed.
When Disney introduced a similar tier in the US in 2022, it started from USD7.99 ($11.61) a month for the basic plan. A year later, the option with ads launched at GBP4.99 and EUR5.99 in Europe, and CAD7.99 in Canada.
The new tier will give Australian and New Zealand audiences three subscription options: ad-supported, Standard and Premium.
What they said: The Walt Disney Company Australia and New Zealand managing director Kylie Watson-Wheeler said the new plan would provide more choice to subscribers and “advertisers and partners will have the opportunity to connect with our general entertainment audiences who choose ads.”
