Donald Trump announces tariffs on China, Mexico and Canada
The news: Incoming US President Donald Trump has announced details of his tariff plans in posts on Truth Social.
The numbers: Trump said he plans to introduce an additional 10% tariff on China, on top of existing tariffs, for goods coming into the US.
He has also indicated plans to introduce a 25% tariff on all products coming into the US from Mexico and Canada and this would "remain in effect until such time as drugs ... and all illegal aliens" stop the "invasion" of the US.
The context: He said one of his first executive orders on 20 January will be to sign the necessary documents to introduce additional tariffs on Mexico and Canada, as well as extra tariffs on China.
He linked this decision to drugs, in particular fentanyl, coming into the US from these different jurisdictions as well as illegal immigration. And he said these tariffs would remain in place until these countries did enough to crackdown on both issues.
What they said: "I have had many talks with China about the massive amounts of drugs, in particular Fentanyl, being sent into the United States — But to no avail. Representatives of China told me that they would institute their maximum penalty, that of death, for any drug dealers caught doing this but, unfortunately, they never followed through, and drugs are pouring into our Country, mostly through Mexico, at levels never seen before," Trump said in a post.
"Until such time as they stop, we will be charging China an additional 10% Tariff, above any additional Tariffs, on all of their many products coming into the United States of America.
"As everyone is aware, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before. Right now a Caravan coming from Mexico, composed of thousands of people, seems to be unstoppable in its quest to come through our currently Open Border," he said.
