The news: Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has confirmed the Coalition will support passage of the Albanese government’s changes to the stage 3 tax cuts after proposing some amendments to the package.

The numbers: The Albanese government would have likely been able to pass the changes with the support of the Greens and three crossbench senators, but the opposition's confirmation of its formal position means that it won't need to negotiate passage of the bill.

The context: While calling Prime Minister Anthony Albanese a “liar in the Lodge” for breaking his promise not to change the legislated tax cuts, Dutton said he would not “stand in the way” of the changes.

At a press conference in Parliament House after a meeting of the joint opposition party room, Dutton said the opposition would take a detailed income tax policy to the next election to return to the “principles” of stage 3, which he maintained was the superior policy.

What they said: “We’re supporting this change, not to support the Prime Minister’s lie but to support those families who need help now because Labor has made decisions that have made it much harder for those families and that’s the position that we have adopted as a party room,” Dutton said.
