The news: Cars dealer Eagers Automotive has announced it has become aware of a claim by a hacker that they have published data online that was allegedly removed from the company's IT systems.

The numbers: On 2 January Eagers confirmed that personal data may have been stolen following a breach of its IT systems in December 2023. The ASX-listed company, which operates around 200 car dealer showrooms in Australia and New Zealand, said there was likely to be no financial impact of the cyber incident on its FY24 results.

The context: In December 2023, Eagers was hit by a cyber attack which saw a third party gain unauthorised access to the company's IT systems and illegally access and remove data.

In its latest update, the company said that it is now aware of a claim by the third party suggesting it has published the stolen data online. Eagers is investigating the claim as part of its ongoing response, which is expected to take "some time to complete".

Meanwhile, the Queensland-based group said it has undertaken a number of containment and remediation activities in response to the incident, and the impacts have been "largely mitigated" across all regions and business divisions.
