Elon Musk rallies with Donald Trump at shooting site
The news: Elon Musk on Saturday (Sunday AEST) joined Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Trump survived an assassination attempt in July.
The context: Musk, wearing a black MAGA cap and joking about being “dark MAGA,” said Democrats would threaten democracy, free speech and gun rights.
He rallied the crowd to vote for the Republican presidential candidate, echoing Trump's earlier calls to "Fight! Fight! Fight!"
Urging the crowd to support Trump in the upcoming election, he said that if he does not win, it would be “the last election.”
In his hour-and-a-half-long speech, Trump revisited the assassination attempt, rallied his supporters with overblown claims about immigration and crime rates, and continued to push false claims of election fraud.
A new line of attack focused on what Trump said was Vice President Kamala Harris’ bungled response to tropical storm Helene, which at latest count had killed 227 people across six states, according to a tally by CNN.
The numbers: Musk’s support at the rally comes as the 2024 election race narrows, with Harris leading Trump by 0.6 points in Pennsylvania, according to an FT analysis of FiveThirtyEight polling data.
Musk has been actively involved with the Trump campaign, supporting through donations and numerous posts on his platform, X.
