The news: The federal government has appointed former NSW Liberal MP Matt Kean as the next chair of the independent Climate Change Authority.

The context: Current chair Grant King will resign in August and will join Transgrid as chair.

Kean last week said he was resigning after 13 years in state politics to join the private sector but told journalists in Canberra today that this opportunity allowed him to "continue providing public service".

In response to questions from journalists about the opposition's nuclear pitch, Kean cited NSW chief scientist Hugh Durrant-Whyte whose assessment was that nuclear would take too long and be too expensive.

What they said: “Mr Kean understands the opportunity that the transition to clean energy represents for our nation,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said at a press conference in Canberra.

“He … understands the folly that walking away from the renewables transition represents for our nation”.
