The news: Qantas has appointed former Telstra chair John Mullen to lead its board from 1 July 2024, replacing chair Richard Goyder.

The context: In October 2023, Qantas announced Goyder would retire prior to its annual general meeting and that Jacqueline Hey and Maxine Brenner would also retire from the board at its half-year results, due this Thursday, after 10 years of service.

Nora Scheinkestel will also join the board from 1 March 2024 as a non-executive director and chair of the remuneration committee.

The Qantas announcement noted that Mullen would reduce his existing professional commitments over time. Mullen is currently chair of Treasury Wine Estates and Brambles.

What they said: “John brings a wealth of experience as a director and chair of similarly large and complex companies to Qantas, as well as great depth from his long executive career in the transport sector both here and overseas. He is the right choice to lead the national carrier into its next phase,” Goyder said.

Mullen said: “I am conscious of the time commitment that this prestigious role requires and will be adjusting my other professional obligations to ensure that I can be fully focussed on this exciting challenge.”
