Federal government invests in AIM Defence, SYPAQ Systems
The news: The Albanese Government has announced initial contracts for AIM Defence and SYPAQ Systems under the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator’s Mission Syracuse, as part of its investment in counter drone capabilities for the Australian Defence Force.
The context: The funding includes $21.3 million for AIM Defence, to enhance its high-powered counter-drone system, and $10.4 million for SYPAQ Systems, to develop an interceptor drone designed to target larger drones. A further $7 billion has been allocated under the Integrated Investment Program (IIP) over the next decade.
This follows the release of the 2026 National Defence Strategy and IIP, which outlined the government’s plan to significantly increase spending on drone and counter drone technologies.
The Albanese government has allocated up to $22 billion for drone, counter-drone and autonomous system technologies over the next decade as part of the 2026 Integrated Investment Program.
What they said: "With the war in Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East showing how unscrewed aerial systems are increasingly being employed in conflict, the development of sovereign counter-drone solutions is essential to ensure the Australian Defence Force can detect, assess and respond to these threats,” Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy said.
