The numbers: St John has held the role of chair since August 2020 and been on the board since 2015. The company said that it generally expects non-executive directors to service a total period of around nine years.

Mitchell joined Fisher & Paykel's board in November 2018 as an independent director, having served as chief financial officer and company secretary of fellow medical devices manufacturer Cochlear between 1995 and 2017.

The context: Fisher & Paykel said St John led the board during a transformational period for the company, supplying products to millions of patients during pandemic, purchasing land for a second New Zealand campus and expanding its manufacturing footprint in Mexico and China.

What they said: St John said: "Neville will be an excellent board chair. He has a strong track record in the medical devices industry and has outstanding corporate governance experience. I am confident the company will continue to thrive under his leadership".

Mitchell, also a non-executive director of Sonic Healthcare and Sigma Healthcare, said: "Fisher & Paykel Healthcare is a unique and innovative business, headquartered in New Zealand and with an unwavering commitment to understanding and meeting the needs of patients around the world ... I look forward to contributing to the company's growth and success."
