The news: The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has appointed former NSW chief data scientist Ian Opperman as a full-time member and reappointed Anna Brakey.

The context: Both Opperman and Brakey have been appointed on a five-year term. Brakey was first appointed to the ACCC in December 2020.

Opperman is the outgoing data standards chair for the federal government’s Digital ID program and the consumer data right. He was initially appointed to the role in March 2025 on a two year term.

He is also the co-founder of consulting firm ServiceGen alongside former NSW Minister for Customer Service and Digital Victor Dominello.

John Crone, former senior economic adviser to Liberal Prime Minister John Howard, will leave the ACCC after seeing out his five year term. He was also appointed in December 2020.

What they said: “These appointments will help to ensure one of our most important economic institutions has the talent and expertise it needs to remain strong and effective into the future,” Treasurer Jim Chalmers said in a statement.
