The news: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has brought back former leader David Cameron as foreign minister in a reshuffle triggered by his firing of home minister Suella Braverman.

The numbers: Cameron was Britain’s prime minister for six years, and led the Conservative Party for 11 years until 2016, when he quit after Britain voted 52%-48% in the Brexit referendum to leave the European Union.

The context: Sunak fired Braverman after she defied him last week in an unauthorised article accusing police of "double standards" at protests, and replaced her with James Cleverly, who was previously foreign minister. Cameron’s appointment in that role is seen as Sunak wanting to bring in a more centrist, experienced hand as he lags in polls ahead of next year’s election. However, it is also likely to revive a divisive debate over Brexit, given his role in holding that referendum.

Cameron will be able to return to government via an appointment to the House of Lords.
