Four Federal Court judges join the Australian Competition Tribunal
The news: Federal Court judges Jonathan Beach, Catherine Button, Cameron Moore and Penelope Neskovcin have been appointed as part-time deputy presidents of the Australian Competition Tribunal.
The context: The judges will begin their five-year terms on the tribunal on 26 March 2026.
Justices Beach, Button and Neskovcin are based in Melbourne. Moore is based in Sydney.
The tribunal is responsible for reviewing major competition decisions, particularly under the new mandatory notification scheme regulated by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
This includes decisions relating to M&A approvals, authorising conduct that would otherwise be in breach of competition law, third-party access to nationally significant infrastructure, exclusive dealing notifications and international liner cargo shipping.
What they said: “These appointments ensure the Tribunal continues to draw on deep judicial expertise in overseeing important competition law decisions affecting Australian consumers and businesses,” Assistant Minister for Productivity, Competition, Charities and Treasury Andrew Leigh said.
