The news: The federal and South Australian governments have inked a deal to fund one of the biggest green hydrogen hubs in the country.

The numbers: The federal government will contribute $70 million and the Malinauskas state government a further $30 million towards the Port Bonython hub near Whyalla, about 230 kilometres northwest of Adelaide. The hub is expected to produce as much as 1.8 million tonnes of hydrogen annually by the end of the decade.

The context: The hub's construction is planned for completion by the end of 2025, but with tender processes for the hub's electrolyser and hydrogen plant delayed by at least three months, the timeline could be subject to change, Renew Economy reports. The federal government says Australia's hydrogen industry will generate an extra $50 billion in GDP and create more than 16,000 regional jobs by 2050.
