Google Bard chatbot rebrands to Gemini, launches subscription
The news: Google has rebranded its Bard chatbot as Gemini, the same name of the company's artificial intelligence model, as a rival to Microsoft-backed OpenAI and its chatbot ChatGPT.
The numbers: The Alphabet subsidiary said that customers can already chat with Gemini via its Pro 1.0 model in over 40 languages and 230 countries and territories.
US customers can now pay USD19.99 ($30.79) a month for the "Google One AI Premium plan", gaining access to Gemini Advanced which includes a more powerful Ultra 1.0 AI model. The subscription also includes two terabytes of cloud storage, and will soon feature access to Gemini in Gmail and the Google suite.
The context: Google's latest launch follows Microsoft's recently announced Copilot Pro, a USD20-per-month subscription for consumers and small businesses to access added capabilities in its AI chatbot Copilot.
