The news: A Google Cloud outage took down multiple popular online services including Spotify, Discord, and Google, with tens of thousands of users reporting issues, according to Downdetector.

Cloudflare, which also reported service issues, attributed them to Google Cloud and said its core services were unaffected.

What they said: Google Cloud said on its status page at 2:00pm PDT (7:00 am AEST) that “We have implemented mitigation for the issue in us-central1 and multi-region/us and we are seeing signs of recovery,” it said.

It added, “we expect the recovery to complete in less than an hour.”

Earlier, the tech giant had said that “multiple products were experiencing varying levels of service impact” and confirmed recovery “in some locations.”

Cloudflare said “a limited number of services at Cloudflare use Google Cloud and were impacted.”

The numbers: Downdetector had reported roughly 46,000 issue reports for Spotify, 14,000 for Google Cloud and 11,000 for Discord at peak.

Other affected platforms included Gmail, Google Meet, Twitch, Snapchat, and Character.ai.
