The news: Google is facing a class action lawsuit over its alleged misuse of market power in the ad tech market.

The context: The lawsuit, filed in the Federal Court by Piper Alderman on behalf of group claimants, is the first to make it to court, after Maurice Blackburn and Phi Finney McDonald announced similar investigations last month.

Piper Alderman on Tuesday said the lawsuit will seek to recover compensation for Australian-domiciled website and app publishers who have suffered financial losses as a result of Google's misuse of market power in the advertising technology sector.

Sydney Times Media and Q News are the two named claimants in the class action.

The case is being funded by Woodsford.

What they said: "The alleged loss is that publishers would have had significantly higher revenues from selling advertising space, and would have kept greater profits, if not for Google’s misuse of market power," Piper Alderman said.
