The news: Google must allow UK publishers to opt out of their content being used to power the tech giant’s AI features in Google Search, Britain’s competition regulator has said.

What they said: Sarah Cardell, the chief executive of the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority, called the measures “a world-first requirement” that should ensure “fair treatment” and give “meaningful choice for businesses and consumers.”

“With features like AI Overviews rapidly reshaping online search, it is crucial that content publishers, including news organisations, have appropriate bargaining power over how their content is used”, Cardell said, adding that the measures should also help individuals better understand the information presented to them in search results.

The context: UK competition rules governing digital markets mean the CMA can impose “conduct requirements” on business activities that have been designated “significant market status.” It’s a moniker Google Search was given in 2025.

The CMA’s announcement comes after Google announced plans to respond to more search queries with AI-generated responses.
