The news: Australia Foreign Minister Penny Wong said that the Government has ordered non-essential Australian officials posted to the United Arab Emirates and Israel to leave “due to the deteriorating security situation.”

The context: Sharing the update via a post on X, Wong wrote: “We continue to advise Australians not to travel to Israel and the UAE. We urge you to leave the Middle East if you can and if it’s safe to do so. Don’t wait until it’s too late. It may be the last chance for some time.”

The minister said that essential Australian officials will remain in-country to support Australians.

The update comes as Iran escalated attacks on areas of Dubai and shipping assets, pushing oil prices back above USD100 per barrel. On Wednesday, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup told staffers not to attend their offices over safety concerns after Iran declared that it will target US-Israeli economic and banking interests in the region.

On Wednesday evening residents in Dubai received at least two missile alerts and a drone fell on a building in Creek Harbour, a new residential development.
