The news: The Australian government will guarantee all regional Rex flight bookings as the airline goes through the voluntary administration process.

The numbers: Rex operates 41 routes to regional and remote communities, including 21 routes exclusively serviced by the airline.

The context: Transport Minister Catherine King announced that the guarantee would allow travellers to book regional flights with the certainty that they will either fly or receive a refund.

Last month, the loss-making airline entered voluntary administration, and Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers stated that the government was “prepared to play a constructive role”.

What they said: “Rex’s continuation is in the best interests of Australia — and the Government is working closely with the administrators to ensure a strong regional aviation presence now and into the future,” King said.

“...This will give customers confidence to continue booking regional flights with Rex — flights that allow them stay connected to family, friends, healthcare and other services — while also helping to maintain regional aviation in Australia.”
