Guy Debelle steps down from Fortescue role

The news: Former RBA deputy governor Guy Debelle has stepped down from the board of Fortescue Future Industries (FFI), the green arm of the iron ore mining group, the Australian Financial Review reported.

The numbers: Debelle spent 17 months at Fortescue after initially joining as the chief financial officer of FFI in June 2022, before moving to a non-executive director role in November.

The context: Debelle was a high profile appointment at Fortescue after resigning as deputy governor of the RBA last year. His departure underlines the tumult in senior leadership ranks at Fortescue. The company announced late on Thursday its chief financial officer Christine Morris would leave after just two months in the role. Earlier this week, the iron ore major announced the exit of CEO Fiona Hicks after just six months in the job. Dr Debelle will take up a non-executive director role at upcoming vanadium miner Tivan.
