Healius first-half loss deepens to $30m
The news: Pathology provider Healius has posted a first-half net loss after tax of $30.4 million, greater than the $12.8 million loss reported in the previous corresponding period amid rising costs and a decline in GP attendance.
The numbers: Revenue over the six months to the end of December increased by 3.8% to $688.1 million on the previous corresponding period. Underlying EBITDA was up 13.1% to $122.2 million.
Cost increases in the first half were "contained to a 1.9% increase", which the company attributed to productivity measures that commenced in FY25 and were implemented across all areas of the business including detailed labour optimisation.
Consumable costs make up 15.8% of revenue, which is a decrease "in absolute dollar terms this half year despite the increase in volumes".
The context: Total GP attendances fell 1.5% compared to the prior corresponding period although there was an increase in the growth of telehealth consults.
Labour optimisation led to a reduction in the full-time equivalent staff employed. Cost management in the second half will "refine" Healius' labour planning and its collection centre and laboratory footprint.
