HSBC appoints Georges Elhedery as new CEO
The news: HSBC has appointed its group chief financial officer Georges Elhedery as its new group chief executive, effective 2 September.
The context: Elhedery joined HSBC in 2005, and was promoted to CFO in 2023 after serving in various executive roles including as co-CEO of global banking and markets.
He will replace Noel Quinn, who announced his resignation in April after five years as CEO after overseeing a successful period of strategy transition within the bank.
The bank noted that Elhedery's replacement would announced in due course.
What they said: “He [Elhedery] is an exceptional leader and banker who cares passionately about the bank, our customers, and our people. He has a track record of leading through change, driving growth, delivering simplification, containing costs and brings a strong focus on execution," HSBC group chair Mark Tucker said.
Elhedery said: “I am deeply honoured by the trust placed in me to lead this great institution into the future".
"Working together with our talented team, I look forward to delivering exceptional value to our clients and investors by driving strong performance on a sustainable growth trajectory," he said.
