The news: HSBC chairman Mark Tucker will leave the lending giant on 30 September after being appointed non-executive chairman of Asia insurer AIA Group from 1 October.

The numbers: HSBC confirmed last month that Tucker would retire as group chairman by the end of 2025, after nearly eight years at the company.

The context: HSBC non-executive director Brendan Nelson will assume the role of interim group chair, following Tucker's departure from the board, and while the process to appoint a permanent successor continues.

Tucker will remain as a strategic adviser to the group CEO and the board during that time, the company said.
