IBM to acquire Confluent for USD11 billion in AI-data play
The news: IBM is making one of its biggest bets yet on artificial intelligence with a USD11 billion ($16.6 billion) acquisition of data-streaming platform Confluent Inc paying USD31 a share in cash.
Confluent, based in Mountain View, California, provides infrastructure to manage large, real-time data streams for artificial intelligence models. IBM said in a statement the acquisition would create a “smart data platform for enterprise IT, purpose-built for AI”. CEO Arvind Krishna said the two companies will help clients deploy generative and agentic AI “better and faster”.
The context: The deal builds on a five-year partnership between the firms. Bloomberg Intelligence analysts said the purchase could significantly enhance IBM’s AI portfolio and drive growth in its software unit.
The transaction will be funded with cash on hand and is expected to improve adjusted core earnings in its first full year and free cash flow in the second.
The deal, expected to close by mid-2026, includes a breakup fee of USD453.6 million if terminated, Bloomberg reported citing a regulatory filing.
The offer represents a 34% premium to Confluent’s last close. Confluent shares surged nearly 30% after the announcement, while IBM rose modestly.
