IDF issues sweeping evacuation order for southern Beirut
The news: The Israeli military issued a sweeping order for all of southern Beirut on Thursday, telling residents of the residential neighbourhoods “save your lives and evacuate your homes immediately” ahead of anticipated Israeli strikes on the region.
The context: Arabic-language spokesman for the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) Avichay Adraee directed residents of the Burj Al-Barajneh and Hadath neights to head East, while residents of the Harat Harik and Shiah neighbourhoods were ordered to move north towards Tripoli and east toward Mount Lebanon.
Adraee added that residents are prohibited from heading south and that any movement south “may put your lives at risk”.
He said that residents will be notified when they can return to their homes “at the appropriate time.”
While previous evacuation orders in Beirut have been for specific buildings the IDF has targeted, the latest order covers four major neighbourhoods in the city’s south, reports The Times of Israel.
The news comes as Iran updated its death toll since the beginning of the conflict to 1,230 people, according to the country’s Foundation of Martyrs and Veteran Affairs said.
The United Arab Emirates Ministry of Defence said that Iran launched another 131 drone attacks on its territory on Thursday, 1,001 of which were intercepted.
