Indonesia admitted to BRICS
The news: Indonesia has been admitted to the BRICS bloc of developing economies as a full member after its candidacy was endorsed by the other members' leaders in August 2023.
The context: The admission was announced by the group’s presiding country for 2025, Brazil, the Associated Press reported.
It noted that Indonesia opted to formally join the bloc only after the formation of its newly elected government last year.
BRICS comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. Saudi Arabia has not joined despite being invited.
What they said: “With the largest population and economy in Southeast Asia, Indonesia shares with other members a commitment to reforming global governance institutions and contributes positively to deepening South-South cooperation,” the Brazilian government said in a statement.
