iPhone shipments down 10% in March quarter

The news: Tech giant Apple’s iPhone shipments slid nearly 10% during the March quarter, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker.

The numbers: IDC’s preliminary data showed global smartphone shipments increased 7.8% from a year ago to 289.4 million units in the first quarter of 2024.

However, Apple’s shipments were down 9.6% to 50.1 million units cause the phone manufacturer to slip to second place, while top maker Samsung reported a 0.7% decline to 60.1 million units.

The context: Chinese smartphone makers Transsion and Xiaomi were the biggest gainers, with first quarter shipments rising 84.9% and 33.8% respectively, the data showed.

Apple has been battling falling iPhone sales in China and rising competition from domestic rivals such as Huawei. Apple's iPhone sales in China are estimated to have fallen 24% year-on-year in the first six weeks of this year, according to data reported by Reuters.

What they said: "While Apple managed to capture the top spot at the end of 2023, Samsung successfully reasserted itself as the leading smartphone provider in the first quarter,” IDC's Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers group vice president Ryan Reith said.
