The news: Iran has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the country’s next supreme leader, according to Iranian news agency Fars.
The context: Mojtaba, aged 56, is set to be the third person to lead the Islamic Republic and the first hereditary succession since the overthrow of the Pahlavi monarchy in 1979.
Fars reported the vote was unanimous and took place overnight, hours before the result was announced publicly.
