The news: Israel has resumed combat in Gaza after a temporary ceasefire ended, while accusing Hamas of firing towards its territory.

The numbers: The fighting ends a week-long truce, which was extended twice and facilitated the handover of 105 Hamas-held hostages and 240 Palestinians imprisoned by Israel. About 140 hostages continue to be detained by Hamas, AAP reports. The truce also allowed humanitarian aid to reach Gaza and some of its population of 2.3 million.

The context: Israel has promised to destroy Hamas in the aftermath of October's incursion by the militant group that killed 1200 people, according to Israeli authorities. Palestinian health officials regarded as reliable by the United Nations say more than 15,000 Gazans have been killed in Israeli attacks and airstrikes.
