Israel says Iran’s security chief killed in strikes
The news: Israel’s Minister of Defence Israel Katz said that Ali Larijani, chief of the security for the Iranian regime, was killed in airstrikes on Monday night.
The context: In a televised statement on Tuesday, Katz said: “Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and I directed the IDF to continue to hunt down the leadership of the terror and oppression regime in Iran and cut off the head of the octopus again and again and prevent it from regrowing.”
Israeli security officials said that Larijani was killed in strikes around Iran’s capital, Tehran on Monday night, with Katz warning Israel’s assassinations and targeted killings in Iran would continue.
Larijani was a former nuclear negotiator for Iran and a ally of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) also said it killed Gholamreza Soleimani, who operated as commander of the Basij unit for the past 6 years, in strikes on Monday evening.
After Katz’ statement, Iran’s state media published a handwritten statement it claims was penned by Larijani, praising those killed in a US torpedo strike on an Iranian warship near Sri Lanka earlier this month. Iranian state media claims the undated letter is from today.
The news comes as a large gas field, the Shah gas project, in the United Arab Emirates was set on fire after a drone strike and the key Port of Fujairah was halted again on Tuesday.
