The news: Jacinta Allan will replace Daniel Andrews as Premier of Victoria, and a last-minute challenger from the party's right-wing faction will be her deputy.

The numbers: The state Labor party retreated to a caucus meeting at midday on Wednesday, where the foregone conclusion of Allan's election was upended by a last-minute challenge by Public Transport Minister Ben Carroll, who later withdrew his nomination.

The context: Allan is member for Bendigo, transport minister and the top pick from Victorian Labor's dominant progressive left faction. Carroll, a part of the party's right faction, made a surprise challenge for the top job and will become deputy premier, avoiding the need for a vote by membership.
