The news: Jamie Dimon said his retirement from the top post at JPMorgan Chase is “several years away”, but that it’s “up to God and the board”.

In a Fox Business interview aired Monday local time, the 69-year-old said “I love what I do” and may stay on as chairman or executive chairman.

Dimon also said that rising US national debt is a “big deal” that could create a “tough time” in the bond market, causing spreads to widen and hurting small businesses, high yield debt, leveraged lending and real estate loans.

The context: Dimon has led JPMorgan for over 19 years, surpassing many other CEOs. The bank boosted his pay to USD39 million for 2024, when it posted the highest annual profit ever in the history of American banking.

What they said: “There will be an appropriate time and then I may stick around for a couple of years as chairman or executive chairman.”
