The news: US airlines, JetBlue and United Airlines, have agreed to a partnership that will see customers use loyalty points across the two carriers.

The context: The deal, coined ‘Blue Sky,’ will see travellers permitted to book flights on both carriers’ websites, while earning and using points on their respective frequent flyer programs.

JetBlue will provide United access to slots at New York’s JFK airport for up to seven daily round trip flights, while JetBlue will be able to operate more flights out of Newark International Airport.

The two carriers will not coordinate on schedules or share revenue.

JetBlue has been scaling back its nationwide ambitions to focus on the US East Coast in efforts to become profitable once again. Efforts to join forces with other airlines have been scuttled by regulators, with both the planned 2023 alliance with American Airlines and 2024 merger with Spirit Airlines struck down.

The current partnership remains subject to regulatory approval.

The carriers said that United will also move its website and mobile app's ability to sell hotels, rental cars, cruises and travel insurance, on both a stand-alone and package basis, to new technology and services provided by JetBlue's Paisly platform.
