The news: Chinese-born Australian journalist Cheng Lei has returned to Australia after more than three years in detention in China. The matter was resolved through legal processes in China, prime minister Anthony Albanese said.

The context: Cheng, a former anchor for state-run China Global Television Network, had been accused of national security-related offences and was arrested and detained by Chinese authorities in 2020.

What they said: "Her return brings an end to a very difficult few years for her family," Albanese told reporters in Melbourne.

"The government has been seeking this for a long period of time and her return will be warmly welcomed not just by her family and friends but by all Australians."
