King Charles and Queen Camilla lock in dates for Australia visit
The news: King Charles and Queen Camilla will visit Australia next month in a six-day tour of Canberra and Sydney, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the Palace have confirmed.
The context: It will be the first visit to Australia by the British monarch since Charles’ mother, Queen Elizabeth II, visited in 2011.
Charles and Camilla will visit the country between 18 to 23 October, 2024, starting in Canberra and ending in Sydney.
They will be welcomed to Parliament House by Albanese, where they will attend a reception for political and community leaders, and Australians who have excelled in the fields of health, arts, culture and sport.
The pair will also pay their respects at the Australian War Memorial, and visit the Australian National Botanic Gardens where they will meet with staff and volunteers to discuss the global impacts of climate change.
Charles will visit CSIRO where scientists will share their work on dealing with the impact of bushfires in Australia, while Camilla will participate in a discussion on family and domestic violence.
In Sydney, the couple will conduct a fleet review of the Royal Australian Navy. The King will also meet Australians of the Year, Professor Georgina Long, and Professor Richard Scolyer, to learn about their ground-breaking cancer research.
He will also meet Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representatives and groups in Sydney.
What they said: “I welcome Buckingham Palace’s statement announcing the visit,” Albanese said.
“The Royal Visit is an opportunity to showcase the best of Australia – our rich culture, our sense of community, and contributions to science, research and global progress.
“His Majesty first visited Australia in 1966, and has a strong personal affection for our nation. We are delighted that His Majesty is recovering well and has made visiting Australia once again a priority.
“Australians look forward to welcoming the King and Queen back to Australia in October, and highlighting the best of the Australian spirit.”
