The news: Kmart and Target chief executive John Gualtieri has been appointed managing director of Officeworks, following the resignation of the retail chain's current boss Sarah Hunter.

The context: Hunter was appointed head of Officeworks in 2019. She was previously director of the demerger program at Coles, overseeing its separation from Officeworks' parent company Wesfarmers in November 2018.

Gualtieri, who joined Kmart in 2008 and currently reports to the group's managing director Aleksandra Spaseska, will commence as Officeworks boss in August.

What they said: "John's deep retail and commercial experience, coupled with his leadership skills, will take Officeworks into its next phase of growth," said Wesfarmers managing director Rob Scott.

"John joins Officeworks at an exciting time, with the business focused on strengthening its omnichannel customer experience, transforming its technology offer and scaling its business-to-business operations."
